Age and ID at Ontario Casinos

Every room on this map of Ontario's sky sits behind the same gate: an age line and an ID check. This page sets out the age, the ID each door accepts, and where your photo matters after you walk in.

01

Nineteen for casinos, eighteen for lottery

In Ontario, the minimum age for casinos and slot facilities is 19. The same line applies to online casino gaming and online sports betting. It holds across all six regions on this guide's map, from Greater Toronto to the North.

Lottery, charitable gaming and in-store sports betting sit on a different line, at 18. That lower age does not carry over to a casino floor. A ticket bought at 18 says nothing about the door of a slot room.

At the door: what staff ask for

  • Only valid government-issued photo ID is accepted to verify age at Ontario casinos. Great Canadian Casino Resort Toronto, Pickering Casino Resort, Casino Ajax and Great Blue Heron also require a secondary photo ID on entry. Gateway rooms ask guests 21 or younger for a second piece of name ID, and Fallsview and Casino Niagara ask guests who look 21 or younger for two pieces.
  • Anyone who appears under 30 must have their ID checked, whatever their actual age.
  • At Casino Niagara, guests aged 21 or younger must show two pieces of identification.
  • To be eligible for a jackpot, a player must provide valid government-issued photo ID, or other ID the operator accepts.
  • At Woodbine Mohawk Park, guests must be 19 or older to enter the slot areas.

Your photo after the door

My PlayBreak terms for casinos run from 3 months to 5 years. Registration for casinos includes a photo, and that photo is used with facial recognition cameras at casinos. The check, in other words, does not end at the door. A face, like a star, is easier to recognize once it is on the chart.

Questions

Is a bank card with a photo on it enough?

It is not enough. Ontario casinos accept only valid government-issued photo ID to verify age. A bank card, even with a photo, does not meet that rule.

Is ID needed to collect a jackpot?

Yes, ID is required. Under OLG's Rules Respecting Casino Games, a player must provide valid government-issued photo ID to be eligible for a jackpot. Other ID the operator accepts can also count. Keeping your ID with you on the floor avoids trouble at the payout.
